Hardwired Security Systems

Many home security systems are installed when a home is built or renovated. This makes it easier and less expensive to do the installation. Hardwired systems can perform adequately and aren’t as vulnerable to the pitfalls of wireless security systems. Many of these systems however, can have wireless components integrated into them such as wireless sensors and security cameras.

As in a wireless security system, the control panel or main console is the heart of the system. It is usually located in a closet or area that is out of site. Each home security system will have a limit on the number of security zones it can cover. Since the number of zones is limited, the installer will have to plan the placement of equipment to cover a house sufficiently. Typically, front and back doors, basement windows and garage entry doors will need coverage.

Smoke detectors, wireless panic or emergency handheld alarm switches can also be integrated into your home security system. Keypads are usually installed at front and back doors to the house and the system may allow at least 6 user codes.  Some hardwired security systems will integrate into a home automation system so that alarm messages can be sent via pagers or cell phones.

Surveillance Systems

Originally developed to provide the ultimate in security for banks, and traditionally used bysecurity intensive operations like casinos and airports, today closed-circuit television (directly connecting video to a recording or viewing source without being broadcast) and video surveillance systems are nowinexpensive and simple enough to be used at home. Now that this powerful technology is within the reach of the average consumer, it makes an effective part of any home security system, as well as a small business’ everyday video surveillance.

Wireless Systems

Wireless systems include a control panel along with any number of alarm sensors and sirens. It can also have one or several video cameras. The system may accompany an alarm response service such as those offered by Brinks and ADT security.

Wireless Motion Sensors

Motion sensors are offered or use in hardwired or wireless systems. Being able to place the sensors exactly where you need them without the hassle of wires makes wireless motion sensors very popular and effective. Outdoor sensors are weatherproof and have dawn/dusk sensor mechanisms to allow you monitor night time intruders. Some have what’s called pet immunity which means they do not go off when a family pet moves around in a secure room or area.

The signal range of the sensors varies from a few feet to 5000 square feet. Some units combine both infrared and microwave signals to provide better protection. They have many advantages over wired motion sensors.

Wireless motion sensors can be placed anywhere in a room and some have swivel mounts to allow you to point them at doorways or windows.

Web Connected Security Systems

With advances in security system technology, it is possible to have your entire security system accessible via computer and the internet to you from a remote location. This includes the ability to view your security camera feed online.

These new systems allow you to connect the camera signal to your home computer, which if connected to the internet, allows you to see the images captured by your security cameras. You can also connect your complete security system to your computer. Via the Internet, you can control the activation of your system, and your system can send messages to you via pagers or to your e-mail box.

If there is an intrusion or malfunction, your system will send a message to you. You can also set up your system to send messages and video images via satellite.

One way or another, these computer systems allow you to keep a close eye on your property while you’re away on travel. If a false alarm occurs, your neighbors won’t have to wait until you get back from your holidays to turn the siren off!
